Data From Noise

Figure 1. (a) Raw shot gather after band-pass filtering and b) the super-virtual CSG with an improved SNR.

OBJECTIVE:

Increase the SNR of the far offset traces using SVI.

PROCEDURE:

  1. This data was collected at the location of Qademah Fault near KAUST, KSA. We used a 109 receivers planted at 3 m interval in a 2D line. Time interval is 0.25 ms and number of samples/trace is 4000. We collected 109 shot gathers at 3 m interfavl, where we have one shot at each receiver location.
  2. Download into your working directory the data file (Data) and the codes (Codes). The data file contains the 109 shot gathers in MatLab format.
  3. Select one shot gather that has far offset traces with low SNR.
  4. Apply SVI to this shot gather to increase the SNR of all traces.
  5. Compair the traces before and after SVI in time and frequency domains.
  6. Pick the first arrival traveltime of the selected shot gather before and after SVI, any changes? why?
  7. Plot the picked traveltimes before and after SVI on the same plot using the same scale.
